Abstract

This article provides a construction of the Moore--Penrose inverse of a linear map $f$ between vector spaces with suitable inner products as the adjoint of $f$ with respect to some modified inner product on the target space. Furthermore, it proves, in a precise sense, that this modified metric is the one that is closer to turning $f$ into an isometry.
